Another day, another newspaper closing down. If you thought there was any comfort in Prince George being a bigger city than Fort St. John or Dawson Creek, the fact that Kamloops is now without a newspaper should give you pause.

The official community plan meeting was last night. The Ginter’s Green group made up the majority of the attendees so obviously Ginter’s was front-and-centre. As I’ve said before, the challenge here is that much of the land they want to protect as greenspace is not owned by the city, but rather private developers, so there’s a limited amount of levers the city has — which doesn’t mean none. One thing that came up is requiring trees to be left on properties which doesn’t maintain the area as a park, but does keep it… green. If you’ve ever taken part in a corporate visioning exercise as a company retreat you will know the general vibes of what went on — sticky notes, stickers, comments. They were giving out Mr. PG stickers. Here’s some photos I took:

The OCP event was at the Two Rivers Gallery so I finally checked out their current exhibit on plastic waste which is worth your time (and entry is by donation):

• Ever since the Citizen published a column critical of Jimmy Pattison there have been a steady trickle of letters to the editor from people ready to defend a man who has more money than the annual civic budget 60 times over but I especially appreciate this one suggesting that 1. literally anyone could be a billionaire, if only we worked harder and 2. if billionaires didn’t exist that would be bad because then neither would millionaires.
