City building inspectors raise the alarm, and Lambda is back in court

akurjata.substack.com

A quick Monday morning roundup of the news that came out over the last three days:

  • The city’s building inspection team is warning mayor and council that policy changes at city hall “will put the City and its Citizens at greater risk,” the Citizen reports. At issue is whether city staff should continue to inspect or approve plans for large buildings — including apartments, industrial sites or anything bigger than 600 square feet or three storeys. Instead, the city is looking to outsource this work to industry but, the inspectors say, the result is numerous safety violations. How this might connect to mayor Simon Yu’s election promise to approve building permits faster, I’m not sure, but it will be interesting to see how he resopnds.

  • Lambda is back in court for more violations of COVID-19 safety policies and this time the lawyer is trying the judge’s patience by arguing the case should be heard in French because she has expert witnesses that only speak French. Whether the owner of Lambda speaks French at all is unclear, since she didn’t show up.

  • Remember when everyone supported healthcare workers? The UNHBC drummers are planning an annivesary celebration of those days.

  • Prince George is getting $12.5 million in provincial funding for infrastructure and amenities.

  • Northern FanCon and Barkerville were winners at the B.C. Tourism and Hospitality awards.

  • After being shut down in January, Tolko’s Soda Creek sawmill in Williams Lake is starting up again today.

  • March is forecast to be cooler than normal.

  • A good Reddit post.

  • Enjoy the winter but if you can’t, this is a good option:
