Two Prince George residents go to Victoria but they are very, very different
I am an anachronism
I made a dumb thing. Sound on:
The story, in case you missed, that helps us meet the moment.
Also I was interviewed by the NPR affiliate in Seattle about *gestures broadly* all of this for their daily podcast. I haven’t heard it yet (I’m assuming it comes out in the morning? Boy I’ll look dumb if it isn’t), I hope it’s not bad. It was more a broad look at the Canadian/B.C. response than the north specifically, but we talked a bit about softwood. Anyhew.
Councillor Cori Ramsay was in Victoria this week as a guest of the legislature for budget day, and she blogged about it here. She was back in time for a special council meeting yesterday where she was unsuccessful in efforts to get the city to partner with Tunisia on sharing information about climate change — a pretty narrow vote.
CTV News reports that another Prince George resident was also in Victoria this week, as a guest of Consrvative MLA Bryan Tepper (Surrey-Panorama), who introduced him thusly:
“I rise today to express how pleased I am that Prince George resident Jasper Sunshine – a popular YouTuber best known as Mr. Sunshine Baby – is with us,” he said. “Please make this Canadian patriot and independent commentator feel most welcome.”
Oh, interesting. Who’s this?
The NDP caucus was quick to follow up the revelation in the legislature with links to social media posts Sunshine has made, including apologizing to Americans for the Canadian government’s response to the trade war.
..
“The leader of the Opposition got up and said some words about standing up for Canada, well, it’s important that we all stand up for Canada,” began Mike Farnworth, going on to gesture to the gallery. “The person introduced by this caucus posted a video that said, ‘the fat pig Doug Ford in Ontario is ready to cut off the power, and Liberals are cheering him on - this is quite literally, by definition, an act of war.’”
CTV News has reviewed the YouTube video and confirmed that Jasper Sunshine, who goes by MisterSunshineBaby, did make those comments, in addition to describing himself as “a fan of Donald Trump” and calling Ukrainian president, Volodomir Zelinski, a “grifter.”
A quick review shows that MisterSunshineBaby’s YouTube page has about 370 times the number of subscribers as this newsletter, 170 times the number of people who subscribe to CKPG on YouTube, or 5 times the total population of Prince George. The average video has about 67K views, and odds are high you have never heard of him before now. This is as good of an example as any that our information ecosystem has been completely upended, and that the term “mainstream media” is increasingly meaningless.
Ah, well, nevertheless.
Today’s news:

Morning! Andrew your excellent segment is indeed up here: https://www.kuow.org/stories/will-the-relationship-between-us-and-canada-recove and starts when there is 13:23 left in the segment (their player indicates the time left, not the time elapsed). It's satisfying (in a very sad way) that US approval has plunged to new lows, and I echo the sentiment that it's not American individuals targeted by this ire, but the American government.
Also that is indeed a fabulous video that you put together :P (to others: watch to the end for a hilarious throwback to Canadian television)
And one more note: the link to Cori's blog post goes to the Canada goose story - looks like her post is here: https://coriramsay.ca/2025/03/04/provincial-budget-2025/
Thanks as always!!!
To be fair to you, mrsunshinebaby 'followers' most likely include a very high number of bots and fake accounts. It's a tactic of far right media (as I'm sure you know). Impressions are also likely bought, which is common across the political spectrum. It's super cheap to do and extremely common for influencers to engage with impression companies.
The fact that you haven't heard of this person is that bots/fake accounts don't push messages much further outside the bubble they exist in. Being a 'household' name still remains a credible metric for determining if some sort of 'influencer' is actually legit and carries true weight and influence.
Ultimately people like this are accountable to no one and their questionable messages are continually embraced by the weak minded....and now our own low-end elected officials.
