Ok, I know I said I was taking the rest of the week off but turns out I have a long break here without much to do and some things to share. So let's finish out the week!
An ancient shark tooth at the Nechako River
This is very cool! A mother and step-daughter were hunting agates along the Nechako River and instead found a megalodon shark tooth:
Af
ter returning home from their expedition, Cook took to social media to see if she could find out what it was she was holding.
Hundreds of people were immediately interested and helped Cook connect with multiple paleontologists who confirmed it was once in the mouth of a giant, prehistoric shark.
But how did one of these end up in Prince George?
“We had a paleontologist respond saying that it was more than likely here as a result of something called glacier displacement,” Cook explained.
“Meaning when it was already a fossil, however many hundreds of thousands of years ago, a glacier scraped it up as it was coming down here, and it took a very long, slow ride down here – eventually settling in the mudbanks of the Nechako river.”
Whose hoo
While there is no guarantee you'll find a shark tooth, it does seem pretty likely that if you head down to the Nechako this weekend you will see it's current star attraction: A great-horned owl that is possibly nesting in Cottonwood Island Park.
The culture wars come to the Croft
The Instagram account Observed in PG spotted this one and hoo boy. If you've been blessed to not be up on this yet, basically at the end of March Budweiser sent out some cans of beer with the face of Dylan Mulvaney on them, and Mulvaney posted about it on her socials. The beers with her face were not available for purchase anywhere, it was just a promotional thing that companies do with folks who are popular on Instagram and TikTok. But because Mulvaney is transgender and it's 2023, the culture warrior conservatives lost their minds and have been doing things like firing bullets into boxes of the beer, which isn't at all threatening. This is real mask-off behaviour because while these folks have largely been dressing up their anti-Trans sentiment under the guise of protecting the children by targeting things like drag storytimes or education programs that acknowledge Trans people exist, that doesn't apply here: It's a beer company, which advertises to adults, and is doing so in part by giving a handful of promotional beers to an adult.
This is all part of the ongoing spinning out of American politics and I'm sure you, reader, like many people in this city, wanted to know if there were any bars in town who sided with this frenzied ideology, and I guess there's your answer.
Quick news:
More flights are being added between Prince George and Calgary.
The Troll ski resort near Quesnel has announced a major expansion.
Here's that rooster story, in audio form. Worth a listen!
OK, that's really it for the week and I'm off next week. Talk after that!
