I'm taking advantage of the long weekend and giving myself a much-needed brain break. So today's newsletter is only the observation that I saw pigeons at the Aquatic Centre this weekend. Until now, I’ve only ever seen them downtown and occasionally along the rail line on 1st and into Cottonwood, which is pretty much downtown. Maybe they have been at the Aquatic Centre before or for a while but this is the first time I've seen them this far afield and I can't help but think of the first time I saw gulls at DP Todd, and now they are at every high school, and wonder if pigeons are making a similar expansion of territory.
Here's an old photo I have of pigeons during a coldsnap in 2020 because I didn't take a picture of these ones.
The other thing I will tell you is I activated a punch pass for the Northern Sports Centre at UNBC and although I have been to the sports centre before, this is the first time I've been asked if I have an account and it turns out I do, from when I was a student 20 years ago, and they even still have a photo of me on file. The sports centre didn't even exist at the time this was taken, it was just an activity/gym area where the pub is now (the pub was where the Tim Hortons in the Wintergarden is) so I'm pretty impressed this was all still in existence. Apparently I am member three thousand and something, they are up to well over 40,000 by now.
Alright, talk to you tomorrow.

Thanks for your service, journalism, and this wonderful newsletter Andrew. I read it daily to be better locally informed.
This is funny though because literally yesterday my 6yo was asking where she can see some pigeons and I told her I’ve only ever seen them downtown here. But now when she gets home from school, I can tell her they are also at the aquatic centre. Very important info.
