Prince George gets a senator

And a hummingbird hitches a ride

At 2 a.m. this morning, Prince George radiation therapist Derk Grooten, a veteran of the Dutch army, ran 11 km to mark Remembrance Day. And at 9:00 am, the first of several Remembrance Day ceremonies for the city will begin at the Civic Centre. There will also be 10:30 parade, with ceremonies at the cenotaph outside city hall at approximatley 10:45. Full details on the Legion website.

Prince George’s first senator (even if she lives in Vernon)

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the @GGCanada appointed Dr. Margo Greenwood as an independent senator to fill a vacancy for British Columbia. Read for more details:

Dr. Margo Greenwood, a UNBC professor since 1997, has been appointed to the Canadian senate. The Prime Minister’s Office says she will sit as an independent. Greenwood told CBC she got the call from Trudeau “about a week ago”: “He asked me if I wanted to be a senator and I said, ‘OK.’”

My quick read through senate biographies also leads me to believe she is the first senator with a Prince George connection — the closest prior being Richard Neufeld, who represented the Peace River North riding before being appointed to senate by Stephen Harper in 2009 and, way back in 1888 century, James Reid, who made his fortune in what is now Quesnel. It should also be noted that while she works in Prince George, Greenwood lives in Vernon which is also home to Leonard Marchand, the first status Indian to become an MP and second Indigenous senator.

Rebuilding Mount Robson

It will take years to rebuild the trail, but industry leaders say the project could become a blueprint for parks across Canada looking to protect themselves from climate disasters.
