Solving a mystery with Safeway
And more Salted Cracker details. Plus a new Northern Capital Meme!
This Globe and Mail article came across my feed yesterday describing a woman who decided to move from Ontario to somewhere in northern B.C. for financial reasons. I say “somewhere” because the article, for some reason, doesn’t actually say where which is kind of funny because it provides two details that make it incredibly clear it’s Quesnel.
It’s five hours north of Kamloops
It has a Safeway
I do wonder if the person who wrote this piece had any idea that this would be enough to give it away. The five hours thing makes it pretty obvious on its own since Prince George is really the only other place even in that range at six hours, and of course the lack of a Safeway here makes it a dead giveaway. None of this matters but I find it funny, either way.
Speaking of a lack of grocery store variety:
Who knows!
More on the Salted Cracker seizure
The Citizen has a few more details about the closure of Salted Cracker including the fact it was being operated as a sole propietership, meaning basically the restaurants and the owner were the same legal and financial entity rather than separate things, which would explain why personal property is being seized as a result of restaurant debts. UPDATE: THIS IS INCORRECT, SEE EXPLANATION HERE. Also of note — the restaurant had started paying its debt off again over the past few months after not doing so previously, so… idk if that means anything for its possible future or not.
Related to the above — I said yesterday I’m not sure if there are any broader trends to be seen out of the closure of restaurants locally but industry groups are saying that a combination of inflation, labour shortages and having to pay back loans during the pandemic is hitting the hospitality industry more generally (I do think it’s worth noting labour shortages often mean shortage of labour willing to work at wages being offered).

Hi Andrew - the wording in the Citizen may have misled you, as Michael Pockett did not operate the Salted Cracker as a sole proprietorship. The civil claim shows that he had an incorporated numbered company, 0883033 BC Ltd, carrying on business under the firm name of the Salted Cracker. However, there were written indemnity agreements, where he signed as indemnitor, promising to pay the bills at any time that were due by the numbered company.
