What's with the winter homicides?
Plus, the year they shoveled the roof of the mall. And Fall in love, not in line!
RCMP recorded the second homicide of 2024 this week, following a late-night shooting along Victoria St. The release came with RCMP raising concern about increasing gun violence in the city, which felt familiar. And sure enough, in April 2023 police sounded the alrm after recording four homicides in two months. And in April 2022, a trio of homicides related to gang violence. In both cases, deaths from January to April account for more than sixty percent of homicides in the city in 2022 and 2023.
I have no idea if this means anything and I’m sure there’s plenty of armchair speculation that could be done despite it being coincidental but it’s starting to feel like a bit of a cycle — a cluster of violent deaths in the first part of the year, police put out a warning, and then things calm? Hopefully this is it for 2024.
Fall in love, not in line!
This photo came across my feed yesterday but I don’t know this account. It seems to be one of those scrapers that just posts images it has stolen from other people around the world, so there’s no sense of accuracy. Has anyone seen this in town?
City Valentine’s
The city did indeed re-up it’s Valentine’s game this year, with a mixture of new additions and favourites from last year. They should honestly consider printing these for real and making packs available for folks to give out.
The year they shoveled the mall
Saw this post….
And got curious. It took a bit of searching, but I found this photo from the Dec. 31, 1982 edition of the Citizen, though the caption indicates it happened in February.
“Snow — tons and tons of it — put a mighty weight on the roof of Pine Centre, prompting the shopping mall to issue an invitation to anyone with a snow shovel who wanted to make some extra cash to turn out. Hundreds did and the huge roof was cleared in early February.”
