When I first drove in to PG from Winnipeg, 30 years ago, I thought to myself, "OMG, what have I done?" First Ave is ugly, and it was uglier then, and there's no glossing over that fact. I've been here 30 years, and I'm glad I didn't turn around and drive back, but what a shock for a newcomer.

As for the NH directive to nurses, it almost seems like there are 2 separate issues here. Searching and confiscating, okay, maybe? that makes sense if you take the perspective that nurses maybe shouldn't be going through patients' belongings for any reason. But illicit drug and weapon use in hospitals is a whole separate issue that should not be allowed, ever, period. What about the rights of all the other patients and staff in the hospital? Where do we draw a line?? Right now there seems to be no line at all, and I kind of think we need a line. One of my kids was exposed to smoke from illicit drugs at work, and she was quite sick. What about her rights? Why are we unable to draw a line, period??

It's interesting that when I wrecked my knee working in the woods, and after my coworker wheeled me in to check in at the ER, the RN asked if I had any knives or other potential weapons (e.g. bear spray) on me because: forestry worker. I said I had a pocket knife and she told me to keep it tucked away. This was a few years ago and I would argue that anyone, regardless of how they appear, should be asked to hand over potential weapons to security for safe keeping.

Totally! This is different than having medical staff search through people's belongings without permission. But totally!!
