Final suggestion: 100 ft tall Mr pg in Christ the Redeemer pose hoisted onto the cutbanks

Expand full comment

YES and then when they erode we can just attach skis or wheels to his feet and ride him down into the river sandblast style

Honestly, now anything else will be disappointing.

All candidates were invited to the UNBC forum. The facilitators walked attendees through the timeline of this.

The CKPG recordings were done in advance.

Conservative candidates are dropping out of debates all over the province. I'm not sure what happened with the NDP.

Either way, there seems to be a concentrated effort to make this election about parties over candidates.

I'll have to watch. I have no doubt they were invited but what I'm curious about is whether they got confirmations prior to setting/announcing the dates. I've learned from experience that is pretty key, having organized multiple candidates events myself over the past decade

That part was a little less clear. My interpretation of what was said was that they did not get confirmation but went ahead anyway. I would have liked a little bit more transparency if they had known candidates weren't going to come a while ago, but it was nice to hear what the green party had to say as a party that isn't highlighted as often as the other two.

Regardless, there are very few opportunities for local forms this election and to have candidates not attend is frustrating.

Love the idea of Mr. PG being right near Tourism PG. It fits. Hopefully sans graffiti and debris.

I also noticed the disruptions during Come From Away, and that was even being far enough away that it didn't mar my enjoyment of the show. But I did wonder how all of the shining flashlights and security talking would have affected people in the direct line of light / voice. It was a fabulous show, and I hope CN Centre staff can make adjustments so we get full enjoyment of other such performances.

We were down in the floor section for Come From Away and the security guards patrolling the aisles did have their radios on full blast as they walked up and down. I emailed their office to (politely) suggest guards have ear pieces for events (even rock concerts as the radio speaker would 100% be drowned out by the music) - hopefully these comments reach them as it was otherwise an awesome show.

Also for come from away, in general I found the audio to be a little too quiet, which may have made those noise issues more annoying. I wish they would have turned the volume up just a touch

100% agree. It was far too quiet from where we were. We eventually adjusted but the first 1/3 (especially some of the dialogue) was often completely drowned out by crowd reactions.

The Mr pg thing frustrates me from a lack of planning angle. We had a great location, why did we build a bunch of ugly apartment buildings behind him? If it were me, I would move him across the road by the signage. I like having it so you see him even if you are just driving through. Isn't that part of what makes him iconic?

I definitely see that argument but I have been unable to think of a location where he is both 1. Visible from the highway for people driving through and 2. Accessible for photos. I definitely think there is a risk that if he is placed downtown, fewer people passing through will see him and he becomes less of a welcome symbol than he currently is. On the other hand, we have a lot more hotels and conferences happening downtown now and those visitors are actually spending time in the city rather than just driving through, so I see the logic in trying to enhance their stay moreso than the folks just driving through. If you are one of the hundreds of people at one of the forums hosted downtown, you currently need to take a special trip just to see Mr. PG, which seems less likely to me than a driver being willing to swing into the city centre for that same photo opp. I will say, though, I am becoming more and more convinced that the former pool site needs to remain a parking lot for all of this to work, which was not my opinion when it was first demolished.

I never realized how many people take photos WITH Mr. PG! 😮

Mr PG has been at the cross roads since as far back as i can remember(1970’s)

I would hate to see him move

I would rather an apartment behind him than dirty downtown!

"the new Tourism Container Market"

um, so the SeaCan is permanent?

I've been told it is, as it has resulted in a ton of walkup traffic and has generally been a big success for both merch sales and just being available to answer questions for people walking through. As I recall, the plan is also to make that area that used to be a winter skating rink and summer spray park a permanent skating rink using an artificial surface, with skates available o site for visitors. Not sure of that timeline, though

I don't know if they're public but at different council/public forums, there have been renderings of the end goal which is similar to Prince Rupert's container market. The current sea can (which I believe is closing shortly) is a stop gap while they've been renovating the rotunda in the Civic Center which will eventually be the actual Visitor's Center (and the market will be in the plaza outside).
