The jellyfish are coming
And a bit more about John Rustad's riding. Plus, watch a boyfriend get roasted halfway around the world
First of all, thanks to everyone who has commented/emailed/texted/etc notes welcoming back the newsletter, saying how much you enjoy it/missed it, etc. I am exceedingly bad at replying but I do appreciate it! And welcome to all the new subscribers who have joined in the last week or over the summer. If you haven’t yet, I suggest having a read of the about page to get a better idea of what this is all about.
Now, let’s talk about jellyfish:
Around thirty years ago, the Chinese Peach Blossom Jellyfish was introduced into fresh water in British Columbia. Now as the climate warms it has been spotted in 34 waterways as far as north as Cache Creek. Dr. Evgeny Pakhomov a UBC professor in biological oceanography/fisheries says that with climate change there is concerns that the jellyfish could spread as for north as Alaska.
…
As for making it’s way up to Prince George, Dr. Stephen Déry a professor in the Department of Geography, Earth, Environmental Sciences at UNBC says the water temperatures are warm enough and it could be only a matter of time.
In 2021, you recall in late June of that year, we had record breaking temperatures right near 40 degrees across part of our region,” says Dr. Déry. “And so, we saw in some of the rivers nearby Prince George and Fort St. James, we saw temperatures close to 30 degrees.”
The good news is their sting cannot harm humans, the bad news is an invasive jellyfish is making its way toward our waters. You can read more about the research here.
Party leaders do not typically participate in local debates
CBC interviewed Vanderhoof councillor Brian Frenkel about his concerns that John Rustad had not reached out to the community about mill closures; It also spoke to Rustad about it, who said he was working on a provincial level to improve things for the area. He also noted it would be ‘unprecedented’ for a party leader to take part in a local all-candidates debate which I have not been able to verify, but I can verify it would be somewhat unusual in recent history. Here, for example, is a 2017 article about John Horgan, who at the time was NDP leader and coming off of a term as leader of the official opposition saying he was unable to take part in his local all-candidates debate — which didn’t stop him from becoming premier shortly thereafter. Christy Clark skipped her all-candidates debate for Vancouver-Point Grey in 2011 and got elected, she skipped it again in 2013 and was defeated by political newcomer David Eby. So mixed results. For what it’s worth, I also am not aware of whether Eby is planning to take part in any all-candidate debates, either — like Rustad, he was not a party leader the last time an election was held.
A tour of the new recycling facilities
I want to know more about the economics of this vegetable stand
I have no idea when Desert Hills started setting up its vegetables trucks in the CN Centre parking lot but I know that sometime this summer there were just suddenly huge lines of cars week after week, prompting both the city and the CN Centre to put out posts explaining what was going on. From what I can gather these are farmed in Ashcroft and Cache Creek and then driven up to parking lots in Prince George, Kelowna and Kamloops (anywhere else?) where people wait for hours to pick up bulk veggies at discount prices? I’ve had them, they’re good but I really would love to know more about the economic model and also how the heck did people figure out it was happening in the first place? I mean, it’s word of mouth now, but… did people just know?

The jellyfish are coming. Yet we have John Rustad, a climate denier and corporate bootlicker a serious contender for our leadership. Friends don't let friends vote for climate deniers. Just think of how much better off we would be if Al Gore got into the states in 2000. Like that's the better timeline. Let's stop voting for the worst timelines.
