I think it was Eamon McArthur was the CO on the news a few years ago, who did not mince words when it came to the irresponsible residents of PG who would not take the time and a few extra steps to secure their garbage and other attractants appropriately. Leading to so many habituated bears and their unnecessary demise.
There was something on Global BC a few days ago about a record number of bears killed in 2023. They had someone from a conservation organization, Pacific Wild, blame the COS for all the deaths. Rather than pointing the fingers at residents who need to be educated, fined, and held accountable for aiding and abetting the death of those bears - she claimed that the groups working on public education have "covered that piece off", making it sound like the public is 100% reliable in managing attractants. I call BS, based on what I know and have witnessed myself over the years, including last year in my own area, with people too lazy to deal with, for example, their fruit trees here in PG. There certainly is no shortage of stories about bears in the urban centres down south, getting into garbage, etc every single year.
